SKillness Plus Social

SKillness® is a bold celebration of strengths and accomplishment, designed to challenge common assumptions and stigmas linked with mental illness in the workplace. It’s an innovative program that was created to empower local businesses to provide safe workplaces and opportunities for inclusion and participation for young people between the ages of 16-35 living with, or at risk of, serious mental ill health (in the Hornsby area).

Mental health is often overlooked as a barrier to workforce participation, but it is a major issue with 1 in 5 Australian workers affected by a mental health condition each year. At PCCS we hope to empower and enrich the community with resources to help with building healthy workplaces, dispelling stigmas surrounding mental health and celebrating the diversity of our community. Mental illness does not limit a person’s workplace contributions, but stigma can limit their opportunities to employment.

Social prescribing is a tool for clinicians to work with patients to address wider social and lifestyle aspects of their health. For people with long-term conditions, the need to adopt healthy behaviours can be urgent and social prescribing can enable them to do so.

Plus Social® is Australia’s first social prescribing program which was pioneered by PCCS with the help from icare. Plus Social is designed to help people whose mental ill health significantly impacts their daily living. Plus Social provides more options for managing mental ill health and tools to implement on a daily basis to improve one’s quality of life over the long term.

The innovative social prescribing program aims to:
-Lift confidence and improve wellbeing
-Increase social connectedness
-Provide tools and links to the community to improve mental health and wellbeing.

The devastating reality of today’s fast-paced world is that many people overlook the skills they take for granted and don’t realise that many people in their own community are affected with mental ill health that impacts their daily living. Plus Social is a program aimed at changing that reality one person at a time on a one-to-one basis, whereas Skillness aims at challenging the stigma associated with mental ill-health and encourages the community to come together and be more accepting of our community’s diversity.
